Objectives: To assess the feasibility and limitation of clinical application of FRAXTM in Korean postmenopausal women.
Methods: Clinical risk factors for osteoporotic fracture and bone mineral density were assessed using FRAXTM for three hundred and twenty postmeno-pausal women and the resulting data was analyzed.
Results: One hundred and sixty eight women (52.5%) were diagnosed with osteopenia with a mean age of 57.9 years and 79 women among them showed osteopenia only in the lumbar spine with normal hip bone mineral density. In the osteopenia group, only 5 women, all of them more then 65 years were in indication for treatment by FRAXTM for Japanese. Women aged less than 65 years were not in indication for treatment despite having two clinical risk factors for osteoporotic fracture.
Conclusion: In Korean early postmenopausal women, half of women with osteopenia cannot use FRAXTM because they have osteopenia only in lumbar spine. Fracture risk assessment system for Korean women should be developed separately.
